Tired of fending for herself and her mother’s penchant for hard-drinking men and barroom drama, 13-year-old Luli hits the road on her own, heading west to realize her dream of becoming a superstar. Among her travels she meets Eddie, a drifter with a chip on his shoulder, and Glenda, a troubled but spirited woman who takes Luli under her wing. Luli's quick wit, some help from Glenda, the mercurial Eddie, and her colourful daydreams help protect her from the incredibly unpredictable band of characters she encounters on her journey.

Facts & Trivia

  • Kirsten Dunst was cast as Glenda, but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. She was replaced by Blake Lively.
  • While filming this film Eddie auditioned for his role in Les Misérables and did his audition in his cowboy clothing and taped it on his iPhone.

Quotes About Eddie

From the author of the book Andrea Portes
I am giddy for people to see Eddie Redmayne as Eddie Kreezer. He’s just riveting. It’s beyond anything I had ever dreamed of. It’s nice, too, because off camera he’s just a really kind, smart, self-deprecating, English gent. He’s top shelf.

You know, before anyone was cast there was a common question: “Why does Luli keep getting in that truck with Eddie?” And my answer was, “Look, if you cast the right Eddie, you’ll understand.” And that’s exactly what happens with Eddie Redmayne. You KNOW you shouldn’t. You KNOW you’re probably going to regret it… but you just can’t help yourself. He’s charming, and crazy, and vulnerable, and funny, and psychotic, and goofy. And, yes, ultimately, he’s broken. But you still fall in love with him.

From the director of the film on casting Eddie
I saw him in the play RED. Thought he was brilliant. Then when Hick came along and I cast Chloe, she and her brother Trevor brought him up, which was music to my ears. I knew I didn’t have to audition him—I met him over Skype and just asked “Do you want this?”

Character Quotes

Eddie: Glenda, I am so sorry. I promise I will never, ever, skimp on the 7-Up again. Scout’s honor.

Eddie: Smart and pretty. That right there is a deadly combination.
Luli: You, you think I’m pretty?
Eddie: Do I think you’re what?
Luli: Pret… you heard me.
Eddie: I guess.
Luli: Well, do you or don’t you?
Eddie: I think if it weren’t for that horrible mouth of yours, then some people, not me of course, but I think some people might find you somewhat kind of attractive. In a fury little animal sort of way.

Eddie: The rich get richer and the poor get the picture.
